I’m spilling the tea

I’m spilling the tea, friend…

Being a business owner means being organized, prepared, proactive at marketing, and having self-awareness WHILE being careful and thoughtful about who you hire on your team!

It’s not just all about being an artist. (Although that would be nice.😜)

I’ve coached hundreds of other Hairstylists, and often they say, “I’ve been burned. I’ll never hire a team again. I’m just going to work by myself.”

That 🔼 is just fine – being a solopreneur – BUT if you really want freelancers, chair renters and/or employees, you’ve got to change your mindset around who you hire.

Here are a few things to consider if, and when, you decide to grow your team:

1️⃣ – make a list of who you want on your team (hairstylist, shampoo gal, accountant, etc.)

2️⃣ – make a list of your non-negotiables- it’s just like dating!

For example:

>> if you’d like to meet a guy who doesn’t smoke, loves animals, and lives within 10 miles of you… why would you date a guy who isn’t into dogs, smokes and lives an hour away?!

You wouldn’t!

Let’s say you need to hire a commissioned Hairstylist…

Your new stylist needs to be enthusiastic, passionate, professional, available to work on Saturdays, and specializes in keratin treatments & updos.

3️⃣ – go look for her

>> post on social, ask your clients, ask your family, friends, and peers

4️⃣ – be straightforward and thorough with what your expectations are when you interview (make sure THEY understand what those expectations are)

5️⃣ – trust your gut 👍🏻

6️⃣ – ask for references

7️⃣ – give them a 3-month trial (you can see if you like working with them and they see if they like working with you)

>> I can guarantee you, if you’ve been burned in the past, you didn’t do your due diligence!

But that’s ok! You’re going to do that now so it won’t happen again. 🙂
